PDC Implements Radio Frequency Technologies into Memory Cards - Memory Cards Going Wireless : Only From PDC

Hsin Tien, Taiwan June 4, 2004 -- PDC (Power Digital Card) finalizes on a new product series known as PDC Wireless which is a system design for wireless transactions utilizing radio frequency technologies implemented into memory card. This system design is a simple and cost effective way to further enhance functions of the SIM card in the mobile phone and the memory card with an embedded RFID to enhance mobile wireless transactions.

Because the SIM card has security functions, this enables the mobile phone to become a smart card device. With PDC Wireless, the mobile phone will be able to conduct wireless transactions with a POS (point of sales) system. The SIM card can act as a electronic purse or a credit card. For electronic purse functions, money can be credited to the SIM card by the Creditor (which may be the service operator, financial institution, credit card company, or even mobile phone manufacturer) and for credit card functions, services can be offered by Credit Card Service companies. The SIM card controls the money and security while PDC Wireless controls the wireless access between the smart card device and POS. For systems like CDMA or PHS which does not use a SIM card, the internal memory chip that stores the Phone ID has the similar function.

Because of the implementation of RFID in PDC Wireless, the cards can be tracked at each manufacturing station, increasing internal security measures. Retail outlets can also prevent theft of PDC Wireless products by tracking of unpaid products. Inventory count of products is also simpler and faster for manufacturer, warehouse operator, and retail outlet.

According to Gen Shueh of PDC, "PDC Wireless is a system design that converges and utilizes independent existing technologies. These are cost effective and easy to implement solutions for the mobile phone, the operator, point of sales channel, and creditor. End users no longer have to bear with the hassles of carrying change or coins with them in the future. All their worries are being taken care of by the mobile phone and PDC Wireless. Even though everything seems so simple, when you talk about patent protection, yes, we are protected. PDC also considers to license or cross license with third party partners to enhance this system technology, allowing end users to be the final beneficiaries of this technology."
